. The following is a true story.
I run a tutoring business and always have students in and out of my office area. I provide snacks and water to all of my students.
One of my boy students asked for water. Of course I said it was fine to get it. Somehow it spilled on the carpet. My first thought was to just grab a paper towel and dry the carpet, no big deal! When I looked up at my student's face, it was filled with terror! He was so scared! I was very
surprised. I quickly assured him that it was not a problem, that it was only water. We could use a paper towel and easily dry it up. Eventually he calmed down and resumed our tutoring.
Needless to say, I was very taken aback at the response of
the child. I can only imagine that in his environment, if accidents happen,
he is either scolded intensely, or punished. So sad. Unfortunately, the more discipline and yelling and fear a child receives when there is an
accident, leaves fear there, instead of understanding. You know the old saying, "When you don't want something to happen, like an accident, that's what happens." To be so scared that something might happen, sets the stage for disaster.
Fear is never the right way to handle anything. Let's help them feel safe and confident and loved.
